OPERA ON THE BEACH! THE HIGHLIGHT OF MALTA 24 WILL BE THE CLIMATE OPERA “SUN&SEA,” AWARDED AT THE VENICE BIENNALE.
“Sun and Sea” is a climate opera created by Lina Lapelyte, Vaiva Grainyte, and Rugile Barzdziukaite. After winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for the Lithuanian Pavilion, it toured major festivals and venues in New York, Paris, Lisbon, London, and most recently, Singapore. During Malta Festival 2024, it will finally unveil its beach in Poland, inviting the local community to join in beach activities together. The event will take place on September 14th and 15th, with tickets going on sale on July 15th.
To showcase the vibrant beach scene, the performance utilizes several tons of sand. People sunbathing on it portray a collection of seductive compositions and melodious stories that balance between earthiness and unsettlingly surrealistic elements. From this wide range of life narratives emerges a penetrating observation of climate change, shedding light on the complex relationships between people and our planet. The piece by the Lithuanian artists is brought to life by thirteen soloists accompanied by the local community, portraying beachgoers in every city visited by Sun and Sea.
Viewed from a mezzanine, the audience looks down on gathered figures resembling a typical group of beachgoers of various ages, each with their own stories, dressed in colorful swimwear and basking in the full sunlight on a mosaic of towels. Observing this dynamic image from a sun-like perspective, viewers notice the fragility of the human condition.
