The exhibition “Odplatanie” (Untangling) will be on display throughout the entire festival and is dedicated to witches, sorceresses, good and bad women, female solidarity and female community. On the day of the opening, September 6, you will also be able to admire a musical performance by violinist Katarzyna Klebba.
Hair is an important element of a woman’s beauty. It tempts and arouses disgust. In various beliefs, it had magical power. Demons lurked in it. Tightly braided, it commanded discipline and obedience. In the film “Her Hair”, women free themselves from this oppression. “Girls from Karlsbad” are students of a girls’ school, immortalized in a photo from 1905, on whom Krystyna Piotrowska painted braids to connect them with the common fate of women and the time in which they lived. “The Braid” is an artifact braided from the hair of several dozen nameless women.
Krystyna Piotrowska (born 1949 in Zabrze) – studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (Faculty of Interior Design, 1966–1972), at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznań (Faculty of Graphics and Painting, 1972–1975), at Grafikskolan Forum in Malmö (1985–1990). She creates works combining photography, graphic techniques and painting. She is the author of installations and videos. Her work mainly touches on the subject of identification and memory. In the years 2006–2012 she was the author and curator of the exhibition “Projekt Próżna” (Project Vain). She also curated the exhibitions “Adoracja Słodyczy” (Adoration of Sweets) at Zachęta (2014) and “Złe kobiety” (Bad Women) at the Cultural Centre “Zamek” in Poznań (2017). She has led workshops on graphics at the Summer Academy of Art in Salzburg on numerous occasions.
